Boating and Canoeing

There is no activity in camp that surpasses the fun of canoeing on Lake Webb. Before using the canoes, each boy must pass swimming and canoe tests, and win his right to paddle.

The Boating and Canoeing instructors help campers learn how to master the art of canoeing and row boating. Skills such as the "J" stroke, draw, pry, sweep and reverse sweep and forward strokes are taught, as well as safety and proper maintenance. Many campers enjoy fishing during free time or simply practicing their skills, while others find fun in swamping their boats to get wet.

All campers who have earned the privilege to canoe are supervise by qualifies beach guards and most stay within sight and sound. Whenever using a boat Camp Kawanhee requires that a Life vest be on at all times.

The camp furnishes paddles for each canoe but not for each individual boy. Those who prefer to have one of their own with symbols of accomplishment painted on it, will have the opportunity to purchase one.

To win his "C", a boy must swim the Cove, one-eight mile. If he swims the lake in front on camp, one-quarter mile, he receives a grey and maroon bar painted at the top of the blade. After passing the advanced canoe test, two bars will be added at the bottom of the blade. Basic Life Savers 12 to 16 years of age, receive a B.L.S., between the top and bottom bars. Advanced Life Savers, 16 years of age and older receive the L.G.T. (Life Guard Training) between the bars on the other side.
